Letterkenny Golf Club Notes.

Well the weather on Sunday was unbelievable it felt like we were in a different country and this helped with a fabulous turnout  despite a lot of sore heads from Lady captain Monica’s celebrations on Saturday.  Again some good performances to go along with the weather.  On the team front the Donegal league team play Rosapenna for a place in the final this weekend.  Good luck Michael and your team of youth and experience.  Also through to their final is the Ulster cup team who beat Silverwood, see next weeks notes for more information.  Despite a fantastic performance from all our Pierce Purcell team they have let go of their Ulster and All Ireland crowns but not without a good fight.  I understand all concerned are devastated but as team manager Barry said everyone on the team played tremendous since the qualifiers in Portsalon and gave it 110% but luck was with the Lisburn side in the end, so hard luck John, Kieran, Brian, Pat, Kenny, Conor, tony, Lester, Gareth, Patsy,Ed,Eddie,Pj and Shane for some I’m sure will be back next year.

I’ve been talking to some members recently who think I should write certain things about rules etc in the notes, as I am also still learning them I am going to ask the immediate past lady captain Tracy to do some notes for me so keep an eye from next week on.

CONGRATULATIONS TO DANNY MC LAUGHLIN ON CAPTURING THIS YEARS CAPTAINS PRIZE.

Well Captains week came to an end on Saturday with over 240 players trying to win the major prize.  However one of the clubs stalwarts Danny McLaughlin came out on top with an impressive 44 points.  The gross prize was won  with an  impressive  2 over par by Con Boyce.  The weather was good with a strong wind at different stages.  At the presentation plaudits were given to our Captain Brian from club President Eamonn, lady Captain Monica, and vice captain Keith(one must comment on speeches, they were short and to the point exactly how Brian would expect).  A big thanks to the help from all on the day, Joe Foley and Ann Condon, Sean and Ann in the shop, Roisin, Ian and staff in the Barnhill bar & bistro, the greens staff for having the course in excellent condition, the competition staff for all their hard work Enda, Danny,Eamonn,Cathal and Barry. Brian ODonnell and Pat McMonagle were 1down after 9 but applied the pressure and won 3&2. the win was secured when the last match pairing of Tony McMonagle and Lester Speer secured their match 5&4 this was this pairings outing this year. The remaining 2 pairs John Russell and Kieran Walsh were 1up going up the last (although not in good shape) and Kenny King and Connor McGettigan were all square playing 17. We now meet Lisburn at Shandon Park on Sunday 15th August in the Final

Ongoing Improvement of Course Facilities – 300 Club

 Dear Member
Our superbly upgraded course has been a welcome and necessary development and has been the subject of favourable comment from all-comers.  Membership numbers have held up and green fee and competitions revenues have improved – which bodes well for our future.  We have adopted a policy of planned incremental improvements to our facilities which have been mainly financed by our fund-raising efforts and we greatly acknowledge your support.

Last year, the club’s fund-raising efforts – totalling €25k - facilitated the following:

1) the expansion and re-sodding of the fairway on the right of the 2nd hole,
2) storm drainage around the 2nd and 3rd greens
3) significant remedial works on the 1st, 6th and 7th fairways
4) rehabilitation of spinny of trees on the right of the 7th green, and
5) the installation of the driving nets,
6) compliance with the 2009 Health and Safety Review

This year, Council are not recommending an increase in the annual subscription.  Consequently, in order to continue our scheduled improvements, we have to prioritise our fund-raising efforts.

The following improvements are being considered for 2010:

1) re-siting underground of ESB power lines
2) remedial drainage works on forward of the 1st green, right of 13th green and forward left of 7th fairway
3) commencement of upgrading of bridges and shrub planting programme
4) commencement of acquisition of course furniture
5) upgrading of external trolly and shoe cleaning bay
